The Health Dangers Of Mould

I Did Not Know Mould Could Cause  Health Issues!

Understanding what affects our health in this day and age, is so multifaceted, and also often missed. Such as off-gassing polluting chemicals such as paints, to invisible radiation around the home from smart meter to wi-fi hubs, in moderation may not cause any issue at all, but too much in some individuals can cause health issues. And Mould can be one of those other factors that are often overlooked and not addressed, in this blog we will be looking at what to watch out for and how you can address mould in the home.

Symptoms Of Mould

We co-exist with mould, as in the life and death cycle on this planet, as it breaks down matter. However, when it grows in our homes it releases spores into the air, which can get into our bodies if we breathe them in. The severity and type of health effects which result from moulds exposure are variable among different places, from person to person and over time. Some of the symptoms from mould could be:-

  • Nasal and sinus congestion
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat/cough
  • Chest tightness
  • Asthma (or exacerbation of it)
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Skin rash, puffiness
  • Red Eye
  • Confusion/Dizziness
  • Foggy Brain

Black Mould

Most house moulds can be harmful to your health, however, black mould is the one to watch out for. Most black moulds are fairly common. They can be treated with normal treatment methods, and are not to be a cause of great concern. There is, however, a particularly difficult type of black mould known as ‘toxic black mould’ or ‘stachybotrys’, which can have much more serious implications on your health.

Stachybotrys, or toxic black mould, is harmful in the home because it produces mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are invisible to the human eye but can enter the human body through inhalation, ingestion and even through the eyes. These mycotoxins are very dangerous and can cause problems with the reproductive system, vision, skin, the circulatory and respiratory systems and can even have psychological and neurological effects.

Who Is At Risk?

Some people are more sensitive than others and the amount of exposure also has a factor. However, certain groups of people will develop more serious symptoms sooner than others, which could be:-

  • Babies and children
  • Elderly people
  • Persons with respiratory conditions, asthma, and/or allergies
  • People with a weakened immune system

These individuals should stay away from damp and mould.

Causes of  Mould

There are only a handful of reasons where dampness builds up and turns into mould which are:-

  • Rising damp in ground floors
  • Leaking pipes
  • Rain seeping into walls, windows or roof.
  • Condensation can also cause excess moisture indoors and is one of the greatest causes of damp and mould.

How to Prevent Mould?

  • Avoiding using paraffin or bottled gas heaters, drying washing outside, and putting lids on saucepans
  • Opening the bedroom window for about 15-20 minutes every morning;
  • Heating your home a little more;
  • Making sure your house is well insulated;
  • Leaving doors open and ventilating rooms regularly to allow air to circulate, unless you’re showering or cooking, and
  • If you’re showering, bathing, or cooking – putting the fan on, opening the window, and closing the door of the room you’re in.

Devices That Can Help

You can get a professional in this field to survey your house for mould, who has all the equipment to do this, but this can cost allot.  My top recommendation is to get the positive pressure unit that fits into the loft and is much cheaper than getting the survey done. But if you have a major mould issue may be getting the survey done is useful at pinpointing the mould that you maybe not able to see.

The picture below shows you a positive pressure system. I’ve heard from many people who have had these fitted , that this has cleaned up all the mould issues in there homes.

And for any reason that does not work for you, my second option would be a free-standing air purifier such as this Vax unit, I like this air purify because many other air purifies have costly filters that need replacing and this one simply needs shaking out or cleaning with a hover and is very effective.

So there you have my health tips on the main things you need to know about mould in the home and what you can do about them.

So as you can see this all-encompassing approach to looking at health covers so many aspects from drinking clean water, eating healthy food to breathing in clean air and when you break it down it is so obvious.

To Your Health & Happiness

Enjoy the clean air
